For world languages and ESL

Speaking practice needs a partner who is available at any hour.

A language student needs many more minutes of speaking than a section can provide. Recorded monologues are easy to grade and easy to rehearse into something unnatural.

Two ways to use it

Simulate the situation. Assess the understanding.

The first example puts the student inside the situation. The second asks the student to explain and defend work they have produced. Both end in the same instructor review.

Simulate

Order, ask and negotiate in the target language

Assignment type: Language Conversation

The situation
The student completes a task such as booking a room, asking for directions or resolving a billing error.
The AI
A native-speaker character who responds naturally and does not switch to English.
The student’s task
Complete the task in the target language and keep the conversation going.

What you can assess

  • Fluency and accuracy
  • Vocabulary in context
  • Recovery when the student does not understand

Assess

Oral examination

Assignment type: Oral Examination

The situation
A unit-end speaking assessment.
The AI
The AI examiner asks questions at the level the instructor sets.
The student’s task
Respond to open questions and follow-ups in the target language.

What you can assess

  • Spoken accuracy
  • Range of expression
  • Comprehension of follow-up questions

These are examples of assignments an instructor could build. They are not customer case studies.

Build with AI

Start from a description, finish as the expert.

Tell the assignment assistant the language, level and communicative task. It drafts the character and the task, and you set how much help the AI gives.

Read more about the built-in AI agents and what they can and cannot do.

Rubric ideas

Criteria you might score against.

  • Fluency
  • Accuracy
  • Vocabulary range
  • Task completion

Every score is a draft with the evidence behind it. You review the transcript, adjust the scores and decide what is released. See how authentic assessment fits into a course.

Questions

Language learning questions, answered.

Does Rocketproof support language-learning conversations?

Yes. The Language Conversation assignment type holds a spoken conversation in the target language and assesses fluency and accuracy against the instructor’s rubric. Instructors read the transcript and review the scoring before release.
